Can a needle scratch a vinyl?
It does not. The needle, or stylus, is made of hard precious stone, and records are made of plastic. These stones are harder than the plastic, so they can withstand the rigors of an uneven surface.
Where do you put the needle on vinyl?
The needle of the tonearm needs to be positioned directly over the outermost grooves in the record. You should see a few widely spaced grooves on the outer perimeter that indicate the area before the recording begins. If your turntable has a cueing feature, you can gently push the tonearm into place with your fingers.
Is vinyl better than digital?
Vinyl is far more high-quality. No audio data is lost when pressing a record. It sounds just as great as the producer or band intended. There’s another, far superior reason why vinyl is better than lossy digital formats.
Is my needle scratching my record?
To determine which of those 2 situations is happening, look closely at your record. If the grooves seem wider and deeper than other records in your collection, it is likely the record has been played to death. If the grooves look good but the sound is still thin or ‘tinny’ then it is needle replacement time.
Does scratching a record damage the needle?
Playing scratched records won’t damage the stylus but certainly could further damage the record and will affect your listening experience. Those scratches will cause the stylus to jump or move out of the groove. Often the stylus will follow the scratch rather than the groove causing even further damage.
Is it bad to leave a record spinning?
Never place or pick up a vinyl record as the turntable platter is spinning. This will quickly scratch the underside of a record. Always wait for the platter to come to a complete stop before doing anything with the record.
How do you stop vinyl?
To stop it, pull the cueing lever up to lift the tonearm off the record. Guide the tone arm back to its resting spot. Only then should you press the “stop” button. Nothing could be easier if your modern record player boasts a USB port or bluetooth technology.

Do vinyls wear out?
Your vinyl records can last anywhere from a year or two and up to well over 100 years. If you’re aiming for the latter, it really comes down to how well you care for your record collection.
What does a bad stylus sound like?
On the audible side, your records won’t sound as good if your stylus is old or damaged. You’ll hear more distortion, crackling, static and overall fuzziness. Even if you can’t see any distortion, you might notice that the stylus is actually skipping or jumping out of the record grooves when it’s playing.
