What fuel goes in a Tilley lamp?
The Tilley Pressure Lamp. How does it work? On pressurising the fuel tank, Paraffin, (kerosene), is forced from the fuel tank through control tap and into the vapourising tube. The vapourising tube is pre-heated by methylated spirit, (alcohol), in a torch cup clipped around the tube.

Can I use petrol in a Tilley lamp?
I would use nothing but kerosene (paraffin) in a Tilley. They are not designed for other fuels. Anything volatile like Coleman fuel would be dangerous if your in the pump NRV failed.
Do Tilley lamps give off heat?
They are the best. The light is fantastic and the heat they give off can be a lifesaver if you camp early or late in the season.
Can you use petrol in a Tilley lamp?
Tilley gave a duration of 12 hours but in reality they last nearer 10 hours. Use kerosene or paraffin because it’s the same thing! It’s a US/BRITISH term, so to be correct the proper name that should be used is Paraffin … don’t ever use PETROL !!!
Can you use meths in a Tilley lamp?
G’day, denatured alcohol – Mentholated Spirits -Metho and meths are all the same thing so its OK.
Can Tilley lamps explode?
They can flare up when the valve is opened, throwing great yelow flames upwards for upto 2ft. Personally, I wouldn’t ever use one, but I do appreciate that once lit they provide a fantastic (and cheap to run) light source.
How much heat does a Tilley lamp produce?
A typical ‘300 candle power’ Tilley lamp uses 1.25 pints of paraffin for 10 hours burning, equivalent to approximately 700 watts of heat input. For this, you get a lamp brightness equivalent (in my own estimation) to a 75 watt tungsten bulb. Tungsten bulbs emit around 5% of the energy input as light, and 95% as heat.
When did the Tilley x246a Lantern come out?
This X246A, in Jason Tyler’s collection, is date stamped August 1961; the model number is stamped in the side of the fount. Jason replaced the burner, vapourizer, washers, and control cock. By November 1961, Tilley had changed to bent frame legs from the straight leg version above. this lantern is in Alex Swanson’s collection.
Do 1212 Tilley service kits fit the x246b?
12 Tilley do a service kit with all the washers etc but they are listed for the X246B which I presume is the current model they sell. I think I read somewhere that they also fit the old models, do you know if that’s correct before I order one. thanks again

Graham. 12 Thanks, it looks exactly like that and I figured the smaller knurled part should unscrew from the main body. Most parts have unscrewed quite easily but this bit is tough.
How big is the burner on a Tilley Lantern?
The burner is the standard 300 cp but Tilley claimed 400 cp for this lantern. This lantern was expensive when it was produced from about 1945-46 (left) and 1946-52 (right). These lanterns are in Neil McRae’s collection.
